Armie Hammer refutes rumors he’s in final talks for Matt Reeves’ The Batman, revealing no one involved with the film has even checked his availability. Ever since Warner Bros. began constructing their Worlds of DC franchise, it was expected that Batman would get a new solo film. However, coming off of the success of Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy proved to be a high bar to live up to for Ben Affleck’s Batman. The character was divisive in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, had a small role in Suicide Squad and was one of the least favorite superheroes in Justice League according to early test screenings.
Due in part to the reception of Affleck’s Batman in the DCEU, the hero’s solo movie has gone through a number of changes behind the scenes. Originally, Affleck was set to write, direct and star in the Batman solo movie. But after certain turns in his personal life, the actor exited the roles of writer and director, leaving Matt Reeves to direct The Batman. More recently, Affleck officially exited the Batman role entirely, paving the way for Reeves to cast someone new as Bruce Wayne. Ever since, rumors and speculation have been running rampant online about who will next don the famous cowl. Now, one actor at the center of a recent rumor has taken the time to debunk it.
It was recently reported that Armie Hammer was in final talks for The Batman to play the lead role and though reputable journalists were quick to dismiss the rumor as untrue, the actor himself has now weighed in. Speaking to Yahoo! Movies UK, Hammer was asked about whether he’d heard anything pertaining to the Batman role. Hammer said:
The Batman currently has a release date in June 2021, so there’s still plenty of time for Reeves to finish up the script (if he hasn’t already) and move ahead with pre-production. But because of that release date, it also means Reeves is officially on a tentative schedule for The Batman, so the film will need to proceed soon in order to make that date. That means the studio and director will likely get started on casting the new Batman sometime this year. If they’re interested in Hammer, they may reach out. That said, when the initial rumor was debunked, it was reported The Batman may be aiming for an actor younger than Hammer so the studio may never contact him about his availability.
No one who can actually give me the job has asked me if I’m interested. I don’t even know if they’re done, I think they’re still working on a script. I don’t think they’re close to production or anything like that, but I can conclusively tell you that no one has checked my availability.
Whether Warner Bros. and Reeves eventually consider Hammer for the Batman role remains to be seen. The studio and director are still working on the movie and with a release date in place, it’s clear The Batman is a priority for both parties. As such, they’ll start the process of casting a new Bruce Wayne eventually. It’s unclear when that final decision will be made, but fans will no doubt keep an eye out for any new information regarding the next actor to don the cowl. For now, we know Hammer isn’t currently in talks, so who ends up starring in The Batman is anyone’s guess.
