Ahead of Arrow’s series finale tonight, star Stephen Amell has posted a goodbye message, saying farewell to the iconic hood. After eight seasons, the flagship Arrowverse show is coming to a close. According to Arrow executive producer Marc Guggenheim, the series finale will serve as an “epilogue” to Oliver Queen’s story.
One can spend time writing a few essays describing the impact Arrow has left. When the show premiered in 2012, few could have predicted it would kick-start a shared TV universe of superheroes. Without Arrow, there would not be The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, nor Batwoman. Without Arrow, there would be no Crisis on Infinite Earths, which gave viewers the return of Brandon Routh’s Superman, and for the first time, Kevin Conroy as a live-action Bruce Wayne. Beyond all that, what Arrow has managed to accomplish in its storytelling across multiple seasons is impressive. The character development of Thea Queen, for example, is one factor of many showing the amount of passion that went into making the show. Arrow’s final episode is coming tonight, and with it comes a goodbye to the hood.
The Green Arrow himself, Stephen Amell, has posted a farewell tweet ahead of the series finale, giving thanks for the “honor” of playing Oliver Queen. He also called his time with the character “a transformative journey,” while also acknowledging that “it was time to let it go.” Amell also included a photo of himself in costume, standing on one of the many rooftop’s Oliver Queen frequented. Check out Amell’s post saying goodbye to Arrow below:
Amell has been portraying Oliver Queen/Green Arrow since day one. The development of the character, from killer vigilante, to inspiring hero, has been at the forefront. When the show began, it was just him fighting a one-man war on corruption. Then Diggle joined his side, and later Oliver found himself leading a team. He’s battled drug dealers, crime lords, and many other threats. The lives he has saved, whether directly or indirectly, are countless. In the end, Oliver gave his life to save the multiverse after a brief stint as the Spectre. Most fans would agree there’s no better way to celebrate a hero’s last hurrah.
Although Arrow is about to conclude, that doesn’t mean the world of Green Arrow will never be seen again. Last week, the backdoor pilot for Green Arrow and the Canaries aired. The episode saw good ratings, so it’s certainly looking solid the show will be called to a series order. If so, it will follow Oliver’s daughter, Mia, as the future Green Arrow. Oliver’s legacy will continue to be felt, even if he’s no longer in the Arrowverse.
Arrow’s final episode airs tonight on The CW.
