Aunt May apparently didn’t survive Thanos’ snap, according to the director of Spider-Man: Far From Home. Spider-Man: Far From Home is the sequel to 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, as well as the first Marvel Cinematic Universe movie to take place after the events of Avengers: Endgame. The film will see the return of Tom Holland as the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, while also seeing Jon Watts return to the director’s chair.
There have been many actresses to play Aunt May over the years, but Marisa Tomei is the most recent actress to take on the role. Aunt May was first introduced in Captain America: Civil War along with her nephew Peter Parker, and both characters returned in 2017 for Spidey’s solo film. Spider-Man returned once again for Avengers: Infinity War in 2018 to help in the battle against Thanos, but unfortunately, the young web-slinger was one of the many heroes who died as a result of Thanos snapping his fingers. Parker’s death was one of the most heartbreaking deaths of The Decimation, but it looks like his Aunt was also a victim.
When talking with Fandango about the recently released Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer, Watts confirmed that Aunt May was one of Thanos’ many victims who disappeared in Avengers: Infinity War. When asking about the people who disappeared and then reappeared five years later, Watts confirmed that Aunt May was killed, simply answering, “She disappeared and came back”. Watts answered several other questions about the action-packed trailer, but ended the interview by saying the trailer only scratches the surface of what actually appears in the film.
Avengers: Infinity War had the twist ending of actually seeing the heroes lose and as a result, allowing half of all living things to be wiped from existence. This meant that fans sat in the theaters while several of their favorite characters literally turned to ashes, but there was always the question of all of the minor characters who didn’t appear on screen. Prior to Avengers: Endgame, Joe and Anthony Russo had revealed other characters that had died in The Decimation, including Betty Ross and Lady Sif. However, they also revealed at that time that Aunt May was part of the half that actually survived the Snap.
While Aunt May didn’t appear in the newest trailer, she did appear in the Spider-Man: Far From Home teaser trailer. Tomei will no doubt be included in the film, but if she disappeared with Peter at the end of Infinity War, the narrative of her character will be slightly different than what fans had predicted. Up until this point, fans thought that Aunt May would have been mourning the loss of her nephew for five years, but Spider-Man: Far From Home looks to be telling a different story.
