So, Captain Marvel has been released, and now, Avengers: Endgame is just a few short weeks away. Now that the former is out of the way and it’s breaking box office records, Marvel Studios is heading full steam ahead into what could be their biggest release yet. The movie promises to be the culmination of the Avengers saga, definitively ending the journey that began with 2008’s Iron Man and beginning a new journey that will be led by Black Panther, Doctor Strange, Spider-Man, and all the other relatively new characters. It’ll be a passing of the torch, replete with huge MCU moments we’ve spent a decade being primed for.
So, here’s what we learned from the trailer.
Tony’s back with the Avengers
While the shots of Tony recording a farewell message for Pepper and looking longingly at his Iron Man mask seemed to suggest he would die stranded in outer space on the Milano, the new trailer suggests otherwise. Tony walks proudly alongside the rest of the Avengers at the end of the trailer, in a shot that perhaps should’ve been left out to preserve spoilers. Still, Kevin Feige has suggested that only footage from the first half-hour of the movie will be used in the marketing. If that’s the case, a heck of a lot happens in 30 minutes. It could be a past version of Tony if the time travel fan theory turns out to be true. Maybe he’ll even end up going out to space to save himself.
Nebula might have a big role in the plot
Since Nebula said Thanos would go to “the garden” after seeing through his plans, fans have assumed she’ll have a large role in Endgame, leading the Avengers to wherever “the garden” is (presumably the farm where the Mad Titan has hung up his armor as a scarecrow). The shot of Nebula in action with her dual blades included in the montage of heroic closeups seems to confirm she’ll have a big role to play in the fight against Thanos. The last time we saw her, she was stranded on Titan with Tony Stark. And yet, in the new trailer, she’s with the Avengers wearing a Quantum suit, so maybe Captain Marvel will come to rescue her in time for the big fight.
The focus is on the past
In voiceovers from the likes of Tony Stark, Peggy Carter, and Natasha Romanoff, the focus seems to be squarely on the past. With actors like Robert Downey, Jr. and Chris Evans almost definitely leaving the MCU after Endgame, it seems likely that a few major characters will die.
This is all but confirmed by the characters reflecting on the respective journeys they’ve been on over the past decade or so, with black-and-white clips from all the old movies (with the color red left in, a la Schindler’s List) signaling that this is a movie about acknowledging the past and moving on from it.
The Avengers have new uniforms
Surprising no one who’s been keeping an eye on the Endgame toy line and plot leaks, one of the revelations in the movie’s latest trailer is that the Avengers all have new white uniforms with their “A” logo on the chest. They’ve never matched before, but it seems as though their new fashion choice is down to more than just style. The uniforms are reminiscent of Hank Pym’s, which suggests the Avengers are all wearing them so they’ll be able to enter the Quantum Realm and, from there, travel through time to save everybody. There’s a practical purpose as well as a stylistic one.
The time travel storyline is all but confirmed
For a long time now, Marvel fans have assumed the plot of Endgame would heavily involve time travel. Doctor Strange can use the Time Stone and he’s seen the one version of events where the Avengers win, so we were pretty much led into a time travel movie. With the clips from older movies, voiceovers by dead characters like Peggy Carter promising closure, and Scarlett Johansson’s ever-changing hairstyle, it seems more and more likely that time travel will play into the plot of the upcoming sequel. Aside from these subtle hints, it’s pretty obvious that’s what those new white suits are for.
Hawkeye probably lost his family in the snap
When Thanos snapped his fingers, we saw most of the MCU characters as they either disappeared or watched someone they care about disappear. But a few were left out and the gaps are being slowly filled in with each new piece of information about Endgame.
The last trailer showed that Shuri was unaccounted for following the snap, and while we saw Clint Barton kitted out as Ronin, we didn’t see what happened to his family. His newly grizzled look seemed to suggest he’d lost his family in the snap, and the new clip of him training his daughter to use a bow and arrow that comes before the Ronin shot seems to confirm it.
Scott Lang is very confused about half the world’s population going missing
When we saw Scott Lang pull up at Avengers HQ in his buddy’s van in the first Endgame trailer, it seemed like he had it all figured out and swung by to solve everyone’s problems. But in the new trailer, as we see him roaming the streets with a confused look on his face as he looks at a plethora of missing persons posters, he just seems baffled more than anything. Maybe he has no idea what’s going on, because he didn’t technically see anyone turn to dust while he was in the Quantum Realm. Maybe he came to the Avengers just to get some answers. There’s no guarantee he knows any more about it than they do.
Everyone’s on the same page about Thanos
The whole “whatever it takes” mantra seems to indicate that all the Avengers are on the same page about defeating Thanos. They’ve all decided to team up and take him on, and maybe they won’t all survive, but it’ll be worth it for the greater good. Everyone we see marching through Avengers HQ in a Quantum suit at the end of the trailer is prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice in the battle against Thanos. These are the characters we need to watch out for – they’re the ones who might die in Endgame. The ones who “died” in Infinity War are the ones with upcoming sequels, so they’re probably safe.
Thor and Captain Marvel might become friends
We’ve seen from Thor: Ragnarok and Infinity War that Thor is at his best when he’s paired up with another MCU character who bounces off him well, like the Hulk or Rocket or Groot. And Captain Marvel showed that Carol Danvers works the same way, with Nick Fury making a good sidekick. So, if these characters work best with sidekicks, maybe they’ll become each other’s sidekick in Endgame. It seemed headed that way when Thor summoned his hammer right next to her head and she didn’t flinch and he said, “I like this one.” This could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
