Avengers: Endgame directors Anthony and Joe Russo indicate fans should not be worried about toy leaks for the film because they are largely inaccurate. Ever since the credits finished rolling on Avengers: Infinity War, fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe have been anxious to know what comes next, but Marvel Studios held off on marketing the fourth Avengers movie until the end of last year, when they finally dropped the first trailer and revealed the title.

During the wait for some official pieces of information, the bulk of the conversation around Avengers: Endgame came from set photos or theories about what could happen after Thanos’ snap. However, some of the discussion changed when toys leaked online that showed the Avengers in new, white suits. It has since been theorized that these are Quantum Realm suits that the Avengers will use to time travel through the realm.

In an interview with Collider, co-director Joe Russo briefly addressed toy leaks that happen on a production of this size and largely brushed them off. It isn’t because what the toys are showing are inconsequential to the film, but rather because Joe points out their rough track record when it comes to accuracy - and he actually thinks this is great.

As he explains, thanks to the toys starting to be designed early in development, they can usually be based on concepts that have been changed for the film. When it comes to Avengers: Endgame, there are two ways to interpret Joe’s response. He is either saying this to signal to fans that the white suits - the biggest and most prominent toy leak to happen for Endgame - are not actually in the movie, or he is attempting to just throw everyone off the scent. These suits weren’t just the focus of one leak either and have been used with multiple toys, so this could be the one percent time the leaks are accurate.

“What’s interesting about toy leaks is that 99 percent of the time they’re not accurate. Because toys are, frankly, tailored to either old concepts or completely different concepts than what’s in the movie. I laugh a lot when those toy leaks show up because I’m like, well, that’s great, because that’s a misdirect [laughs]. Because it has nothing to do with the film.”

However, Joe is certainly not wrong when it comes to toys not always being accurate, and we just have to look back to Avengers: Infinity War to prove it. There were toys that involved Hulk busting out of the Hulkbuster armor during the battle in Wakanda, but this was not even close to coming to fruition during the film. Whether this concept was scrapped early in development, during filming, or during post-production, this is a prime example of the toys not getting it right.

With speculation on Avengers: Endgame still running rampant, this is a great reminder that we may not know as much as we think. Marvel is keeping as many details from the 3 hour film under wraps as possible, so Joe probably isn’t alone in welcoming misdirects from the toys. Of course, we’ll know soon enough just how much of Avengers: Endgame the toys get right, but in the meantime, this just adds another layer of uncertainty to the film.
