According to writer and director James Gunn, he won’t change the script for Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 because of the events of Avengers: Endgame. There has been lots of speculation the new Guardians film script would have to be changed due to series character Gamora’s death and subsequent re-introduction into the altered timeline of Endgame. However, there’s no shortage of alternative possibilities for ways Gamora could be reintroduced to the Guardians family.
Guardians of the Galaxy 3 has had somewhat of rocky production history. The writer and director of the first two Guardians films, James Gunn, was fired back in 2018 due to “offensive attitudes and statements discovered on his Twitter feed.” However, his firing didn’t last long. The cast of Guardians of the Galaxy 3 penned a letter to Disney supporting Gunn, and some actors even threatened to quit if he wasn’t reinstated. It wasn’t a huge surprise Gunn was brought back on to the project, as Disney apparently always planned to use his script anyways.
The news that Guardians of the Galaxy 3 won’t change its script because of the events of Endgame comes from James Gunn himself, first reported by ComicBookMovie. Talking to fans on an Instagram live video, Gunn reportedly said:
It’s certainly not unusual for a script to be tweaked in pre-production, or even into production. With a project as big and adaptive as Guardians of the Galaxy 3, it’s even less surprising. The most notable takeaway from Gunn’s statement is that he already knew what was going to happen in Endgame, so the script for Guardians 3 was developed in accordance with those events. It’s worth noting Gunn was one of the premiere creative leads in the MCU before his firing, and aside from Joss Whedon, Kevin Feige, and the Russo Brothers, there probably aren’t many creators more knowledgeable about the future of the MCU.
“The script will change because my scripts always keep changing up until the moment I shoot them. But it won’t change according to anything from Endgame, because I already knew what was in that script before I wrote Guardians 3.”
James Gunn has been a huge influence on the MCU throughout his Guardians films, although Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has previously stated Gunn’s importance to the MCU’s future was exaggerated. Feige may be right in implying there are other directors who can replace Gunn, but if such a change was to be done, it would be to the chagrin of the film’s fans and starring cast. For now, Gunn remains in charge of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, with production beginning after he finishes his work on the upcoming DC film The Suicide Squad.
