As part of a wave of newly released Avengers: Endgame character posters. Marvel confirms that Shuri died as a result of Thanos’ Infinity War snap. To call the conclusion of last year’s Avengers: Infinity War shocking would be an understatement. Sure, those familiar with Thanos’ snap from the pages of Marvel Comics had some idea what was coming once he got his hands on all six Infinity Stones, but even they had no way of predicting which characters would survive and which would turn to dust as a result of the MCU version.
As Marvel fans around the world are now well aware, the death toll caused by Thanos’ genocidal snap - since dubbed “The Decimation” - was massive, and a large chunk of the MCU’s heroes weren’t spared its wrath. Spider-Man, Black Panther, Star-Lord, Doctor Strange, and many more visibly met their maker at Thanos’ hands, with the end credits scene of Ant-Man and the Wasp later revealing that Wasp herself didn’t survive. Still, that left the fates of several characters officially undeclared, as they weren’t shown as being alive or dead after the snap.
Earlier today, Marvel Studios released a wave of 32 character posters bearing the slogan “Avenge the Fallen.” Characters still among the living post-snap are depicted in color, while those who didn’t make it are shown in black and white. One of the latter characters is Shuri (Letitia Wright), T’Challa’s genius inventor sister. While a quick shot in the Avengers: Endgame trailer led many to believe Shuri was in fact dead, now all doubt has been removed.
Interestingly, Shuri being confirmed dead going into Avengers: Endgame directly contradicts statements made by Angela Bassett - who plays T’Challa and Shuri’s mom Ramonda in the MCU - last summer that Ramonda and her daughter had survived the snap. That said, Bassett could’ve easily just been mistaken, as she wasn’t even in Infinity War, and may not have been privy to the most up to date information concerning Endgame at the time she made her earlier proclamation.
Another possibility to consider is that Marvel Studios and Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo may have at one point planned to keep Shuri alive. After all, she wasn’t killed off onscreen in Infinity War, presumably for some type of creative reason. For now though, Shuri is deceased, and it remains to be seen how and when the remaining Avengers will manage to resurrect her, assuming they do so. Unfortunately, reversing the snap will likely prove even harder without her intellect and creativity at their disposal.
