Michael Fassbender has emerged as one of the most versatile stars in recent years, performing in everything from Ridley Scott’s Alien: Prometheus as an android, to intimate Westerns like Slow West as a laconic bounty hunter. Most know the ginger-haired Irish-German actor as the younger X-Men villain Magneto in X-Men: First Class, and he first came to the attention of movie goers in the big budget epic 300 as a Spartan warrior following King Leonidas.

Despite starring in blockbusters now, his breakout role was in the highly acclaimed HBO series Band of Brothers, and his early career is full of work in television and stage productions. Most have come from the UK, like the fantasy series Hex, and offered a wide variety of parts that built the foundation for his versatility today. Aside from Band of Brothers, here are 10 TV series you forgot Michael Fassbender was in.

THE DEVIL’S WHORE (2008)

Full of top notch talent from across the pond, this historical drama is full of exquisite costumes and plenty of cloak and dagger intrigue. Michael Fassbender plays Thomas Rainsborough, a prominent Vice-Admiral in the English Civil War and a strong opponent of the ruling monarch King Charles I.

Opposite Fassbender is Doctor Who’s Peter Capaldi as Charles I, and joining him in his quest for democracy is Dominic West, playing British hero Oliver Cromwell. This four-part series is packed with plenty of bodice-ripping and flashy fights, though it could have benefited from feeling less rushed. See it for Fassbender looking like a members of the Three Musketeers.

HEX (2004-2005)

Despite only getting two seasons, this BBC series was dubbed “the British Buffy” and enjoyed a good deal of popularity among its fans. Hex follows young Cassie (Christina Cole) as she attends Medenham Estate, a co-ed elite boarding school. The former lady of the manor practiced black magic and was killed for it, but somehow Cassie manages to reawaken the darkness and acquire dangerous powers.

Cassie is aided by her best friend Thelma (Jemima Rooper) in containing the supernatural occurrences that begin happening around the school. They soon realize that the “evil” is brought on by nephilim (fallen angels), led by the sinister yet charming Azazeal (Michael Fassbender), who desires to force Cassie to bear his demonic child.

HOLBY CITY (1999 - present)

Like America’s General Hospital, Holby City is a long running medical drama that focuses on the cardiac unit of Holby City General Hospital. It examines the everyday happenings and personal lives involved with the doctors, nurses, and patients that make up the unit.

Some will find the series cliched, given that it follows many of the tropes of other medical procedurals, but lurking in over twenty years of episodes are gems like “Ghost”, in which Michael Fassbender played a patient under anesthesia so convincingly because he famously fell asleep during the episode. Other famous actors who appeared in the series include James McAvoy, Jessica Chastain, Sophie Turner, and many more.

MURPHY’S LAW (2003-2007)

The criminal underbelly of London is the setting for this gritty cop drama, focusing on Irish officer Tommy Murphy (James Nesbitt) while he undergoes dangerous undercover assignments. He’s failed his psychological evaluation, so he’s given one last chance by his boss to prove his worth, and the stakes just get higher the further into the London Crime World he goes.

Fassbender plays a complete dirtbag Caz Miller in Season 3, who Murphy must befriend as he goes deeper into his undercover assignment. The series never pulls its punches when it comes to revealing the unabashedly morally compromising lives of the criminals or its protagonist. Watch it to see Fassbender sport a leopard print coat and diamond earrings like a boss.

POIROT (1989-2013)

The famous detective drama Poirot, based on Dame Agatha Christie’s mystery novels, was an acclaimed series for decades on A&E. It chronicled Belgian private investigator Hercule Poirot (David Suchet) as he solved murders among the glittering London upper classes of the ’20s and ’30s, assisted by his English sidekick Captain Hastings (Hugh Fraser).

If you’ve followed the beloved series over the decades, you’ll see it populated by all sorts of familiar faces. From rising stars like Emily Blunt and Jessica Chastain, to veterans like Hugh Bonneville and Tim Curry, it was known for showcasing superior acting talent. Michael Fassbender appeared in the episode “After the Funeral” in 2011 as George Abernethie.

NCS MANHUNT (2002 - present)

Not to be confused with America’s NCIS, NCS Manhunt nevertheless followed an elite crime unit known as the National Crime Squad led by John Borne, the courageous Detective Inspector who will stop at nothing to solve every case.

Fans of Poirot will recognize David Suchet as DI John Borne, who so memorably played the avuncular private investigator solving crime in ’30s London. The series may feel like “Hawaii 5-0 in the UK” with the way the fictitious NCS solve their crimes, but it’s worth a look for the reunion of Michael Fassbender and David Suchet, who last appeared together on Poirot.

HEARTS AND BONES (2000)

For fans of Michael Fassbender’s intensity, they may enjoy seeing his more quirky side in Hearts and Bones, which follows a group of close friends who all move to London to pursue their careers and possibly each other. Frequently one was in love with another one’s spouse, but for plot related reasons couldn’t be together.

Amidst the dalliances Michael Fassbender appeared early in the series, playing the sporty Hermann, a German soldier who traveled all the way across Europe to be with Sinead. He liked riding motorcycles, deep sea diving, and heavy metal music, whereas she enjoyed book clubs, watching Bridget Jones Diary, and quiet evenings in. Ultimately their relationship didn’t work out, but it’s fun to watch it while it lasts.

WILLIAM AND MARY (2003 - 2005)

Before appearing in simmering dramas, Michael Fassbender stretched his range by appearing in light hearted comedies. In 2003 he appeared in William and Mary, a jovial series focused on William (Martin Clunes) the undertaker and Mary (Julie Graham) the midwife as they lead their eccentric lives together.

Despite death being all around the pair, the somber moments give way to many joyful ones as they realize they’re the best people to be present at the beginning and end of humanity’s life cycle. Michael Fassbender appears in Season 3 as an Eastern European chef who vies for Mary’s affections.

Like America’s Unsolved Mysteries, this five-part series investigates true crimes in British History that have so far never been solved. Host Julian Fellowes presents each episode’s mystery and walks viewers through it as it’s dramatically retold with actors.

Michael Fassbender appeared in A Most Mysterious Murder: The Case of Charles Bravo, playing Charles Bravo himself, the 19th century barrister who was poisoned in 1876. He was survived by his wife Florence Ricardo, often suspected of committing the crime.

TRIAL AND RETRIBUTION (1997 - present)

Similar to series like Law & Order in America, Trial and Retribution followed serious crimes from their execution, to the pursuit of justice, and finally to the court of law where those responsible are tried and committed. Detective Michael Walker (David Hayman) joins Detective Inspectors North and Connor to track down the suspects.

In the mid ’00s, Michael Fassbender appeared on the series as Douglas Nesbitt in the two-part story “Sins of the Father”, playing the Irish defense barrister of a teenager accused of killing a neighbor. His calm and collected demeanor in the courtroom is a welcome contrast from all the highly theatrical melodrama around him.
