Sean Murphy’s Batman: White Knight universe is getting bigger. On Monday, Murphy revealed that his DC Comics Black Label universe will expand with new series featuring popular Batman characters with new creative teams for an all-new imprint.
Murphy’s first Batman series set in the ‘Murphyverse’ was Batman: White Knight. The book was a new take where the Joker became cured of his madness and went after Batman, calling him out to the public as the true villain. The eight-issue miniseries had a successful run and led to the series Batman: Curse of the White Knight early last year. That series focused on Batman’s history and the return of Azrael. Murphy’s alt-universe stories have remained interesting as he hasn’t been afraid to shake up the Batman mythos in completely unexpected ways.
Murphy was doing a Q&A on Twitter, where he first announced that DC wanted a mini imprint based around his White Knight ‘Murphyverse.’ While the series was expected to continue in a newer Murphy-led series following the conclusion of Batman: Curse of the White Knight, Murphy revealed for some new miniseries, he’s going to write the outlines than hand them over to a new writer and artist team. It’s the first time other writers and artists besides Murphy (and colorist Matt Hollingsworth) will get the chance to play in the ‘Murphyverse’ sandbox. It’s an exciting development as Murphy’s Batman universe is chalked full of potential as it doesn’t follow typical Batman continuity. Creators will be allowed to bend the Bats history, like Murphy has, a little further to their own design. Murphy said to expect series starring Harley Quinn, Nightwing, and Batgirl.
Murphy has laid out some ground rules to his Batman universe: Dead characters stay dead - don’t expect the Joker to come back. No inner monologues, as Murphy isn’t a fan of using them. The comics must come out on time, which is a good thing for readers. Lastly, Murphy stated that “only the best talent who puts customers/readers first.” So, with those parameters in mind, the ‘Muphyverse’ will soon be expanding with a hopefully very talented/diverse pool of creators that can bring something new to his already excellent world. It’s exciting to see Murphy expand the White Knight universe. The result should be some fantastic books that will continue to build on what he initially started. Batman is in good hands in the ‘Murphyverse.’
