Counterpoint reported last week that the worldwide smartwatch market grew by 37% last quarter, with the Apple Watch way ahead of second-placed Fitbit. Apple released bug fix updates to apps in its iWork suite for both iOS and macOS. The new versions include new iPad keyboard improvements for Numbers on iOS. Following the announcement of the Apple Music Christmas deal, it seems that Apple has decided to offer more gifts for its users. From December 24 to 29, the company will have a daily surprise on the App Store. Although more details aren’t known, these gifts will likely be some paid apps and games. The campaign has already appeared in Today’s App Store tab for some users in Australia and other Asian countries, but the surprise is not yet available....

Apple has won the last of six patent infringement claims filed by Motorola, after the US International Trade Commission agreed with Apple that the patent was invalid for ‘lack of novelty’, aka being too obvious. Netflix dropped the official trailer for the second half of Arrested Development’s fifth season. After years of rumors about the show being adapted into a movie after it was canceled in 2003, it was finally resurrected for a fourth season by Netflix in 2013. Epic Games has announced that it has acquired artist portfolio and sales site ArtStation, for an undisclosed fee. In a move likely designed to strengthen its antitrust case against Apple, Epic has told artists that it is reducing its standard commission from 30% to 12%. The two companies made a joint announcement. Epic went into more detail on the commissions structure in a separate blog post. Facebook has begun using artificial intelligence to identify those who may be at risk of committing suicide, reports the BBC. The company has long offered a reporting tool for those concerned that posts by a Facebook friend may indicate suicidal thoughts, and it is these reports that have been used to teach the AI system to detect worrying posts. The social network has developed algorithms that spot warning signs in users’ posts and the comments their friends leave in response....

Starting tomorrow, AT&T will be revamping its Mobile Share Value plans by adjusting data tiers and plan prices for new and current subscribers. At the low end, AT&T is consolidating a few data tiers into just two options with different price points. Meanwhile, AT&T’s double digit data tiers are also being reduced, and some subscribers can potentially end up with more data at no extra cost per month or get a better rate on even higher data tiers....

Australia Post has been swamped with work as Victorians do more online shopping in lockdown than usual, and COVID-19 restrictions impact the delivery process. On Sunday morning, a photo taken inside Australia Post’s Sunshine distribution warehouse revealed the high amount of deliveries the post service is dealing with. Michelle Skehan, Australia Post’s General Manager of Corporate Affairs, admitted on 3AW today that the photo was “a little bit terrifying.” Ms Skehan claimed that online shopping was “booming” in Victoria, up by an estimated 30%, and that Australia Post was having a more challenging time dealing with the pandemic this time than during prior lockdowns....

With Edgar Wright’s blessing, fans are remaking Baby Driver with LEGO. The 2017 film marked a career high for Wright, as it was the first of his six-film catalogue to receive Oscar nominations. In addition to critical acclaim, Baby Driver is, to date, by far the most profitable film that Wright has made. Guardian reports that BBC iPlayer will launch in eleven European countries, coming later this year to United States. The subscription-based service that streams some of the finest BBC programming launched its iPad app today in Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Ireland, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and Switzerland. In those markets, BBC iPlayer will require a monthly fee of 7 Euros. The app provides on-demand access to BBC’s popular news and documentaries, in addition to both archive and most recent shows such as Doctor Who and Top Gear....

We’re big fans of BBEdit over here (and its free counterpart TextWrangler) so today’s update is exciting news. I built 9to5mac a few years ago using BBEdit (on Drupal!) and the software has just gotten better and better (though 9to5mac has since been ported to WordPress.com). How much is updated today? It isn’t upgraded in the App Store just yet but Bare Bones says that any BBEdit purchase since the App Store opened will get a free upgrade....
